New ACT-Based Project Announcement
Building Australia’s Leading Intergenerational Living and Learning Community
Today, we were proud to mark the signing of the Project Development Agreement for a pioneering new University-based retirement community on the campus of the University of Canberra; a project that brings together the strengths of academia, healthcare, and place-making in a unique and transformative partnership.
This collaboration between the University of Canberra, Opal HealthCare and Pariter is a living model of healthy ageing, lifelong learning, and intergenerational connection built into the heart of a world-class educational campus.
Together, we are creating a place where:
- Older Australians thrive, with access to quality healthcare, vibrant social experiences, and meaningful connection to the energy of university life.
- Students learn in real-world settings, engaging with older adults in health, aged care, social work, psychology, and beyond.
- Research and innovation flourish, as the community becomes a collaborative living model for ageing, wellbeing, urban design, and community care.
- Sustainability and social impact are tangible, with walkable design, green infrastructure, and programs that improve quality of life across generations.
The first of its kind in the ACT and only the second in Australia; this will be a future-focused, health-oriented community that reflects the shared values of dignity, innovation, and community inclusion.
We believe this project will:
- Strengthen the social fabric of Canberra, contributing to its vision as an age-friendly city.
- Unlock new economic and workforce opportunities, especially in the care and education sectors.
- Set a benchmark for integrated living, with the potential to be replicated in other university settings across the country.
This partnership represents the very best of what can happen when education, healthcare, and visionary development come together with a shared purpose – to improve lives, foster connection, and reimagine what ageing looks like in the 21st century.
Why Now?
Australia’s ageing population, shifting retirement expectations, and evolving care models demand new ways of living that emphasise connection, purpose, and inclusion.
This project responds directly to those national priorities – embedding lifelong learning, health innovation, and community wellbeing into a single, integrated precinct.
